History of Mental Ray: When was and how was it used first?

Apparently it was released in 1988-1989, but wasn't included in Softimage until 1995-1996. I would like to know if anyone has had experience with mental ray or has any info on it pre-Softimage Extreme (1996)?

oh,it too old.
It is difficulty to look for that soft.
Maybe you can find it on the net somewhere.

Yeah, I messed around with mental ray a bit before it hitched a ride on Softimage in '95. It's wild how it evolved.
