I’ve finally decided to introduce myself after years of eagerly reading your messages.
I own an Indigo2, an Indy, and an O2, but it’s the arrival of the one I’ve dreamed about for so long that made me want to introduce myself: an Onyx2.
Back in the 90s, I think it was a Crimson that blew my mind. Like many, I was on Amiga, doing professional 3D graphics. I also wrote for a French magazine, Amiga News, about Imagine (Impulse). When the Amiga died, I couldn’t bring myself to switch to PC, so I jumped into the booming web industry... and since then, I’ve worked in marketing communications.
I’m still fascinated by SGI architecture, and by mainframes and supercomputers in general. I think it goes back to my childhood passions: instead of playing with toy cars, I preferred drawing fake computer circuits and imagining stories about WOPR, HAL 9000, and Shirka.
I have a collection that I’ll try to downsize now that the queen (Onyx2) has arrived. I use it for what I know best: 3D and image work (video, etc.). Loved to use an old HI8 and a blue/white G3 To do the video editing.
I’m also part of an association called SILICIUM, mainly active in the southwest of France. We preserve these old machines while introducing them to the public through various events. We even published a book this year for our 32nd anniversary (256 pages, 28 euros, of course ^^).
I’m a bit chatty—I wanted to keep this short, but I failed again!
