gr_osview high Gfx activity bar

Hello fellow SGI-enthusiasts, especiallially those with a Tezro/Fuel/Onyx3: do you also have a high gfx-load while idling on the desktop? The 3D-performance is not afected by this.

I also do (on a Tezro) but it looks like all interrupt load according to the legend. I wonder if this is just some sort of baseline load for communication to the host?

thank you for checking - so this is normal behaviour then. Another Tezro-question: Is it normal that the fans are running in high speed? can they speed down at low temperatures?

The fans should be under variable speed control. I guess high speed is relative, but mine definitely ramp up / ramp down as the environmental temperature sensors give higher or lower temperatures.

Try /usr/sbin/l1cmd --scdev /hw/module/001c01/L1/controller env in a shell to see what your sensors are reporting.

oh thank you - a handy command!
so I see the fan speeds are a bit above the warning speed - means they are running fairly low then

Also, note that the Gfx bar in gr_osview auto-scales by default, and it is an absolute number rather than a percentage. In the example above, the top of the scale is 200. If you then do something graphically intensive, you'll see the scale change to match - 500, 1000, 5000, etc. If you then close everything back to the desktop, the scale will shrink back down to 200 again.
