I have downloaded Irix 6.5.30 and burnt it with cdrskin -v dev=/dev/sr0 Install.image. Fdisk shows three SGI partitions for the cdrom under Linux but you can not acess them with kpartx -a (does nothing).
I had to replace the CDROM with a DVD because the cdrom was physically broken. It is an SCSI-1 DVD. If I enter the eject command on the console it ejects the dvd. However it does not seem to recognize the inserted cd and its partitions since /dev/drv/dksd4vol is the only visible cdrom device node. There is nothing like /dev/drv/dks0d4s0. The SCSI DVD has some jumpers: ID4,ID2,ID1,PRTY, TERM ON/OFF, 512/2K, TEST, POWER SUPPLY. I have set ID4,PRTY,TERM ON/OFF and tried both positions for 512/2K. I have set the jumpers the same way as for the old cdrom.
To force boot from cdrom I have removed the hard disk but it does not boot. If I press ESC and have the hard disk inserted it boots from hard disk. Too bad that I do not know the root password and that I do not know how to reset it. The screen stays dark until the GUI is fully booted. There is no GUI to select that you want into the PROM console.

I need to reinstall since I do not know the root password. However installing via network seems to be no option because of security.

Unfortunately automounting seems disabled so that I can not get any data onto that machine. Is there any way to see if the dvd drive works when I log into the guest account?

This part puzzles me a bit; it is quite possible there is some PROM option you can enable to require a password for getting to the prompt, but at least I have not encountered that before. The network option is what I would suggest, and there are a few experts here (e.g. @Unxmaal )
