Question: How do I burn an IRIX CD on my PC with IMGburn?

Hello all,

I recently acquired an SGI O2 (1998 model) and want to install IRIX on it. I found Foundation 1 & 2 disc images, as well as November 1999 IRIX 6.5.6 disc images in .img format. Can I just drag these into IMGburn and burn them to a standard CD at 24x speed, or do I have to give it special settings? I got the links from this post on WinWorld forums: https://forum.winworldpc.com/discussion/8683/request-irix-6-5

Here's the links I found, are there any others that I'll need to make the O2 bootable and usable as a CAD workstation?

Let me know if I need to add any more information.

Thanks-

You may want to use something a little newer than 6.5.6 (ideally at least 6.5.22). While not all needed, an example set of 6.5.26 CDs I have contains:
  • 6.5 Foundation 1 & 2
  • 6.5.26 Installation Tools and Overlays 1, 2, & 3
  • 6.5.26 Base Documentation November 2004
  • 6.5 Development Libraries
  • 6.5 Development Foundation
  • 6.5 Applications November 2004
  • 6.5 Complementary Applications November 2004
  • ONC3/NFS Version 3
  • General and Platform Demos 6.5.12 1 & 2
  • SNMP Access to HP-UX MIB 1.1.3
A minimal install might consist of Foundation and Overlays but the other CDs may have things that you are expecting or might want. See this thread for other sources of software and disk images: https://forums.sgi.sh/index.php?threads/sgi-software-resources.21/ as well as our SGUG-RSE project (in the SGI Development forum) for modern open source software.

You may also want to look at our Booterizer project which performs a network (CD-less) install of 6.5.30 off of a Raspberry Pi or Virtual Machine server.

I have used CDBurnerXP on Windows in the past, and MacOS' inbuilt disc image burning utility as recently as a few days ago, to successfully burn IRIX installation CDs without any special settings or issues.

So when you used CD burner xp did you need anything like block size header or tail or did you ignore everything and burn it on bone stock settings. I wanted to do this because one of my o2s network plugs is messed up. Booterizer worked well once vagrant stopped being a pain and I installed on 2 o2s easy peasy.

but I’d also like to know how disc burning works for the preservation of discs by using burnt ones and keeping rares as collection items only.

I've heard about booterizer, can I download the Virtual Machine version from their github? It seems like the easiest way to install IRIX onto my O2. Also, what kind of Mac did you use to burn your CDs? I have a 2009 Mac Pro that I could try that with, because so far my PC disks haven't worked. I have been able to use the IRIX 6.5.14 Nov. 2001 disc that was in the drive when I got it to format my new HDD, but other than that I'm stuck until I figure out booterizer or burn my own CDs.

I'm now going to use Booterizer to install it, but did you use the raspi version or the VM version?

The provided instructions should cover it; if using the VM option, Booterizer will construct the VM on its own. For the Raspberry Pi version, an image is provided.
Ok thanks. I'll try this out once I finish formatting the hard drive. This looks like a very useful tool, and it looks like all the disc images I'll need are in that link you sent.

I definitely suggest Booterizer. The RPi version works well. It usually requires some fiddling for local wifi, etc. I keep a microsd card around with it set up for my machines.

As for burning CDs, I've used some Linux command line tools in the past. Lately I've been using ye olde Nero for Linux from 2009, works well. On Discord some other folks say the newer Windows versions work as well. That said, your usually best served by Booterizer and then using NFS for further file transfers. Linux can do an EFS disc image loopback mount to dump CD contents.

I'm new but I'm using CDburnerXP on Win 10 with a DVD writer
Everything by default

If the file is an .img, I just rename .iso
